"Three summer days at West Virginia's Otter Creek Wilderness, and we only encountered two other people on the trails, both locals fishing for brook trout. My friend wanted to fish, but I wanted to bag peaks, of which I only got one. Possession Camp Trail runs about three miles from Otter Creek up to the summit of Green Mountain, where there are no views, but there is a pleasant campsite with an eerie name: Possession Camp. "Possession" can mean ownership, of course, but this is Appalachia, where "possession" can also refer to the influence of evil spirits--as in the folk religion of the mountains. Weird name. I like the spooky explanation, but it's probably the banal one. There's nothing spooky about this beautiful, remote spot, not even on Friday the 13th. " — briansnyder • Jun 13, 2025
