"Don't do what I did. I hiked to Green Knob's fire tower for the sunrise. That was a mistake since there weren't any good views from up there. I should have watched the sun come up from the "Green Knob Overlook" parking area right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Despite running as fast as I could down the Green Knob trail, I only caught the very end of the sunrise from the overlook spot. Silly me. The sky looked pretty damn impressive, too.
This isn't the first time that this has happened. If there's a photogenic sunrise or sunset opportunity, I will usually find a way to miss it! This is especially true in faraway places that I might never get to revisit. " — theascent • Apr 27, 2022

"Recorded 3.2 miles each way on GPS. Took 1 hour 45 minutes to summit from Black Mountain Campground Parking Lot. Return trip took 1 hour 30 minutes. Very few people on the trail despite perfect weather. The hordes were off climbing Mt. Mitchell. I wanted to avoid a busy trail given COVID 19." — tlannin • Sep 5, 2020

"This was a tough hike for my buddy and me. We hiked with his dog, who had no problems at all of course. On the way down we had to be careful not to slip, and hiking poles are very useful. Overcast skies made for cooler temperatures for the time of year." — tlannin • May 24, 2014
