"In the clouds most of the day. Had a few moments where it cleared within seconds, then you'd turn around and the cloud was back. Enjoyed the climb up to Great Gable, but Base Brown was purely a 'ticking off' exercise, I doubt I'll ever top that one again.
The original plan was to tick off Kirk Fell and Fleetwith Pike nuttall summits as well. However, I had a friend with me who doesn't do this as much as me, so had to tone down the pace somewhat. We also started a bit later so was a race against the sunset.
I think I also descended Great Gable down the wrong slope, ending up on a seriously steep scree slope towards Beckhead Tarn. We persevered after descending too far down and tried to traverse more towards the slope we should have probably descended down. All ended ok in the end, but it was hardly a safe route - I'm not a fan of scree surfing on stupidly steep ground ;-)" — adventure-stricken • Nov 6, 2025
"16/9/2022 Excellent day out climbing Needle Ridge above Napes Needle and continuing to Great Gable, etc. Base Brown definitely gives the best descent from Gable. Climbed with Susan." — johnandsue4fun • Sep 16, 2022
"Climbed from Wasdale to summit of Great Gable via Needle Ridge and continuation scramble. From there on to Green Gable and back to Wasdale via Aaron Slack and Styhead Tarn. Good mountaineers day with Susan." — johnandsue4fun • Jun 18, 2021
"Very thick fog. Visibility fell to 3m. I had to use a map and compass to locate the summit from Brandreth as my ancient phone does not have GPS. A fell runner appeared out of the fog as if by magic and promptly disappeared into it. Stopped for a snack and to take on water. Camera failed to record for some strange reason and I lost my handkerchief. Found a lost hiker at the bottom of Windy Gap and helped point him in the best direction. "On a weekend trip to the Lake District, we started from Seathwaite Farm in Borrowdale on a bright sunny morning. We headed W steeply up the waterfall path of SourmilkGill. Then up a rough route to the summit of Base Brown 2120ft. From here we headed down the wide ridge and rejoined the main path for the ascent SW to Green Gable 2603ft. Green Gable stands in the shadow of its bigger neighbour Great Gable but is a good viewpoint. We dropped down to Windy Gap, then scrambled up the steep rocky slopes to the summit of Great Gable. Here the cloud descended. We dropped to the viewpoint at Westmorland Cairn, but the cloud didn't lift. We returned via Styhead Tarn. The walk back down the valley was a bright sunny evening!" — davidlong • May 26, 2013
