"16/9/2022 Excellent day out climbing Needle Ridge above Napes Needle and continuing to Great Gable, etc. Base Brown definitely gives the best descent from Gable. Climbed with Susan." — johnandsue4fun • Sep 16, 2022
"Climbed from Wasdale to summit of Great Gable via Needle Ridge and continuation scramble. From there on to Green Gable and back to Wasdale via Aaron Slack and Styhead Tarn. Good mountaineers day with Susan." — johnandsue4fun • Jun 18, 2021
"Visibility extremely poor... no more than 3m. Had to use map and compass to find a path off the mountain. I was aiming for Kirk Fell but I must've been led astray by a false cairn because I had the descent from hell in the fog. Only distinguishing feature on the descent was a large overhanging rock that appeared to be propped up by small stones that someone had put there... so I knew there was a path of some description at that point. But ended up on a large boulder with a 3ft drop either side and 4ft in front. Either side of drop was loose shale (scree gone) that I knew I was going to slide down but couldn't see the bottom, so slide to where? A sudden drop? Took a gamble and chose the left run and slid into a boulder field that eventually led to some grass. Completely disorientated in the fog and unable to take a baring. Heard some voices and shouted out in the fog and that led me to the tarn at Beck Head between Kirk Fell and Great Gable. The people had left but I was able to take a baring and decided to end my walk and take my escape route via Moses' Trod rather than risk getting lost on another descent from Kirk Fell or Pillar (my next two stops had I continued). Had those peo..." — NorthernWayfarer • Jul 25, 2017
"On a weekend trip to the Lake District, we started from Seathwaite Farm in Borrowdale on a bright sunny morning. We headed W steeply up the waterfall path of SourmilkGill. We then left the path and went up a rough route to the summit of Base Brown 2120ft. From here we headed down the wide ridge and rejoined the main path for the ascent SW to Green Gable 2603ft. Here we noticed the weather was starting to deteriorate. We dropped down to Windy Gap at 2460ft, then scrambled up the steep rocky slopes to the summit of Great Gable. Here the cloud soon descended. We dropped to the viewpoint at Westmorland Cairn, but the cloud didn't lift. We returned via Styhead Tarn and a detour on the south traverse to view Napes Needle, but the cloud didn't lift above 1500ft, so views were limited. The walk back down the valley from Styhead Tarn was a bright sunny evening!" — davidlong • May 26, 2013
"From Wasdale Head. With James (son). we climbed Great Gable via the col between it and Kirkfell. We returned the same way. The upper part of the mountain was in mist and with quite a lot of snow on the ground. There was slight falling snow on the upper parts. Just below the Great Gable - Kirkfell col on the descent we met Katherine and Jonathan (daughter and son) who had ascended Kirkfell first and then Great Gable by a slightly different route." — peter43 • Apr 9, 1984
"Leeds University Outdoor Activities Course at Dale Head, Duddon. Leading and teaching sixth-formers with Chris McAllistair. We took our group from Dale Head to Wasdale Head and set up camp. Another group did the same. At 18:30 Chris, one of the boys and I departed for Great Gable via SW ridge, then along the path to the col between Great Gable and Kirkfell, and followed the path to the summit, arriving at 19:50. We descended on the track to Sty Head Pass. At the top of the pass it became too dark to see properly. We missed the path at the top and did not find it again until someway down the pass. A large moon shone behind Great End. We arrived back at the camp at about 21:30." — peter43 • Mar 30, 1961
