Expansive views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from the summit. The hike involves two trails, the Valle Large Trail #248 and a non-designated trail that parallels a fence line. To get there requires driving NM-58 from Pecos to Cowles then taking FR-223 towards Iron Gate. The trailhead (35.8279, -105.6376) is easy to miss as the small sign sits off the road. From the junction of NM-58 and FR-223 its 2.9 miles to the trailhead where there's very little parking. The trail parallels FR-223 for about 300 feet or so then heads east into the forest. The trail is obvious and easy to follow. About 7/10 mile in, around 35.8279, -105.6291 leave Trail 248 and follow the fence line south up the mountain. You will pick up various trails all heading the same way. Eventually the trail leaves the woods and enters open meadow. There is supposed to be a bench marker but it either has been removed or its buried in the grass. Some rocks mark the HP.
