"Watch out for dog ticks on this one!
The trailhead is at the second gate, behind a mile of flood damaged dirt road so we parked our sedan at the first lot. It is slightly over a mile between the 2 gates, and before the halfway point mount rainier and adams become visible to the west. The trail (also a dirt road at this point) starts out through a small valley with more flora than you will see the rest of the trip, and ends after very little elevation gain and less than a mile at the edge of the "Skyline Rim" and the beginning of the endless views.
The canyon vista here includes a small dam as well as a selah butte and baldy peak on the other side. right and to the south lies the false summit and left and 2 north takes you to Gracie point, the highest part of this expansive rock. This section of trail hugs the rim except for 1 section where it gets down into the valley and towards a horse watering hole, the only vegetation along the rim. I recommend staying on top of the ridge and avoiding this area as I found it to be infested with ticks.
