"Nice backpacking shakedown with my buddy Austin before we head out for the Arizona trail next week. Drove down to gold butte townsite and backpacked down. Wanted to get Bonelli on the way down to the lake, but it was coated in a layer of snow that looked too deep for my liking . Maybe on the way back I thought. Got rattlesnake which was pretty easy and not too far off the road even though I didn’t approach it from the road. Camped down at the Lake right next to Scanlon Hill. Refilled the 5L We each took with us at the lake. Hung out with some burro who gave me some tips on Gold Cross. Got gold cross the next morning which took me a bit longer than I thought (~2.5 hours RT from scanlon hill) which put me behind for also being able to tag Powell while I was down there. Gold cross was beautiful and seeing the colorado river flow into lake mead was awesome. Packed up and left after that, and quick got Gregg peak from scanlon road . This took less than 30 min round trip and is an easy bonus if you are coming down the dugway. Only three entries since 01 on Gregg ! Camped right at LMNRA boundary that day. On our final day coming out , we got crushed by a huge snow squall right after comin..." — joshortman • Feb 27, 2023
"Been wanting to get this peak for awhile. With my boat stuck in a slip because the water is so low I thought why not. Good climb great weather.
Accessed via wild burro bay. 12.4 miles on foot, 2572 feet vertical, 3.5 hrs moving time. Down low runable burrow trails all over." — ryancoburn • Oct 20, 2021
"12.30.2020~Gold Cross Peak, NV. Solo. 11 miles (4 kayak) 2,600’ gain (nearly all class 2-3+ scrambling and bouldering) 4:25hrs round trip on foot, 5:52hrs round trip including kayak portion. I kayaked from South Cove, AZ....a boat launch in Gregg Basin, the most remote part of lake mead where the Colorado River feeds into the West end of the Grand Canyon.
*Gold Cross Peak is the high point of the Nevada's Hiller Mountains, which lie on the large peninsula that juts out into Lake Mead north of Temple Bar, Arizona. The summit's attraction is not so much its physical attributes, but instead, the challenge of its remote, difficult-to-access location~*this description by climber Gordon MacLeod.....Total trip from home including driving was 10.5hrs. I took Hwy 93 AZ to Dolan Springs, then Mead View to South Cove. With an 11am launch, I was under the gun to finish by dark as it is one of the shortest days of the year. It was stressful and the terrain was difficult because of my access point. It was an epic panic scramble of boulders of all sizes. Class 2 to class 3+. I don’t think anybody does it from South Cove because most trip reports and tracks available describe more mellow long di..." — paula.raimondi • Dec 30, 2020
"What a cool day! I've been wanting to climb this mountain for a few years, but it was always a pain to plan logistically. I mentioned to Matt that I was interested & he said he could borrow a small boat, so we put the plan into motion. Instead of a small boat, we had a sailing dingy, but still! We met bright and early, then drove to Temple Bar Marina, which is about 3-4 boat miles from our proposed landing spot in Wild Burro Bay. Matt, Amber & Erica were in the dingy, since they were lightest; I rode in the canoe with Jessica & Ken. We only had 2 oars, so Ken & I rowed over. It took around an hour or so. The dingy had a small motor, so they should have had an easier time, but they were taking on water due to the hole for the sail and the weight they were carrying. Matt had to bail water out with an empty Gatorade bottle all the way there! Eventually, we were all safe and sound in Wild Burro Bay and started our hike. The hike itself was pretty uneventful. We hiked through a wash for a while, then followed some game trails, then back to the wash. When we neared the summit, we all kind of took off in our own direction and met up at roughly the same time. The views from t..." — Kevin • Feb 16, 2019
"Gosh, where do you even start with a trip like this? I don't think my trip report will ever match the epic-ness of the "A Boat Trip" trip report from 2003. Seeing that esteemed and entertaining author's name (along with their companions) in the summit register at the peak made the day that much better...! Gold Cross Peak is pretty remote, lying near the southern tip of the Gold Butte Peninsula in Nevada. Your approaches, barring a multi-day many-mile backpacking expedition, are either by boat from Temple Bar, AZ (across the lake, about 3.5 land miles based on Lake Mead's current water level) or by severely-kitted-out 4x4 HCV (aka a Jeep with mods) from the north via the Scanlon Dugway. We took the former option. Our intrepid party of six had a small sailing dinghy with a 2.5hp motor attached and a very nice and sturdy canoe. We launched around 6 AM - thankfully, the weather had calmed down from the epic storm and 30+ mph wind gusts the evening before (we would have cancelled if the weather had not cooperated. No deaths from hypothermia on Lake Mead, thank you very much). There were mild issues with the dinghy taking on water, but the canoe was rock-solid (if... rocks floated. like ..." — psychikingjes • Feb 16, 2019
