"Richard hadn't been to Gass Peak before & it is one of my favorite local peaks, so we drove out to the trailhead in his 4Runner & made the hike up the trail to the summit. On our way back, we took the side trail that goes by Gass Spring to check it out, but it was dry. The weather was breezy & chilly, but it was a great hike. " — Kevin • Feb 27, 2021

"Gass Peak towers above Las Vegas, standing sentinel at the north end of the valley. I'd been meaning to hike up it since late last year, but didn't get around to even trying until April of this year. Sadly, the Desert National Wildlife Refuge was closed at the time due to COVID-19 and the federal and state governments requiring non-essential workers to stay at home. They had hoped to keep the refuge open while minimally staffed, but unfortunately people started taking advantage of the situation - offroading across the desert in protected areas, burning open fires, dumping trash, leaving graffiti everywhere... so DWNR was closed until they could bring rangers and other workers back. I say this as a reminder that we're GUESTS in this land - it is public land, so it is our public duty to LEAVE IT UNSPOILED so that everyone can enjoy it. Leave no trace. Pack it in, pack it out. And EDUCATE OTHERS - it's great if you're already good at leave no trace and you're a responsible recreator in the wilderness! How about all of your friends? Your family? That random group you passed by? Help them become responsible recreators so we can all continue enjoying public lands. And pick up that trash ..." — psychikingjes • Nov 19, 2020

"What a day!!! Since the shooting range was closed due to COVID-19, we finally had a good access window to try Gass Peak from the south. We parked near the closed gate (by the 2 large water? tanks) and hiked up the dirt road to the foothills. From there, we made out way into Gass Peak Canyon and followed a convoluted route above and around some large drywalls, then finally took a steep ridge up to the summit. It was surprisingly busy, so I didn't touch the summit register. We followed the same route back down. Tough, but worthwhile." — Kevin • Mar 28, 2020

"I figured this wasn't a very popular trail because it's on an a high-clearance recommended road, but I was wrong. There were probably 10 people I passed while going up and down.
Nice hike, albeit very steep in multiple spots. I hold it akin to Frenchman mountain's big brother. Longer, and more ups and downs.
Top was also extremely windy
Overall, though, decent hike. :) " — alexehagen • Mar 7, 2020

"Great climb, we drove through the Desert National Wildlife Refuge on a perfect day. We were all alone until the summit when a younger guy caught up to us. He was a geologist and my partner Webster was a former geologist, so they had a lot to talk about. By the time we got down, my legs and feet were pretty sore, but great feeling, especially as i can see the summit of Gass Peak from the window of my house up in North Aliante! :) " — davesinlv • Apr 15, 2017

"This was a cool unique snow hike up to Gass Peak with Harlan for my 1st time. Fun fluffy snow to scamper down. I thought winter was over so I busted out the shorts and was shocked by the amount of snow! We encounter enormous Mtn Lion prints on the trail. Great day and super pretty hike. "Rode our bikes from our house to the desert north of Durango and Moccasin road, then hiked up the alluvial fan to the back side of the range, then up to Gass peak from the west ridge and then down the front through lots of talus and had to stop and turn around twice due to cliffs." — tomsenreed • Jan 2, 2008
