"Frost Hill is the highest point in the Bristol Hills range and the Finger Lakes region. It also has 1,120 feet of prominence, making it the most prominent peak in New York west of the Adirondacks and Catskills (edging out Connecticut Hill by a single foot).
Last summer, I approached Frost Hill from the southeast, but ran into posted signs at the property boundary of Camp Cutler's boy scout camp and Ski Valley's defunct resort. This time, I attacked Frost from the west, starting at the Cumming Nature Center parking lot. The nature preserve owns land on both sides of Gulick Road and is closed on Mondays, so I figured this would be an ideal opportunity to head up to my destination undetected. I love stealth missions!
Every step was a challenge because the snow was so hard and choppy, as is often the case in March. Trudging up that crusty mess was slow going, but I eventually made it to the viewless summit. There was an unusual benchmark on top, as well as a witness post sign. The best views on this long plateau are from the northeastern slope of Ski Valley Hill and the southeastern slope of Cleveland Hill.
