"It felt like early spring on the pleasant ascent to the summit, which is a little further than 3 miles up. Beginning at a Maryland state park, you cross the Mason Dixon Line at the summit. This is the historic divide between the slave states and the free states (or North and South—but don’t tell Marylanders that they’re southerners!) Look for the old border marker that says 1766 off in the woods to the left, though there’s a newer one along the trail. Push on into Pennsylvania a short distance for the best views. Note, once you get into PA, the trail turns right and goes down the mountainside. You can keep going straight, but the trail peters out. You’ll pass the old home site of a heartbroken hermit on the lower flanks of the mountain, which is named after him. He is said to have fled civilization in the early 1700s because no woman would have him." — briansnyder • Feb 11, 2023
"Had to make my "annual pilgrimage" up to the summit of Evitt's Mountain while I camped at Rocky Gap. A thunderstorm blew up while I was on the ridge; one close lightning strike was a bit hair-raising, but other than that I just got soaked (had to put my camera away early, and it got so bad I had to put the cell phone away too). This is my "traditional" hike while camping at Rocky Gap State Park in Flinstone, MD. My family and I have been camping there since 1997. Considering my current base camp is Las Vegas, it's a bit of a trek, but always worth it. :) Unfortunately the area had been on the receiving end of 0.5-1.0" rain PER DAY for the week or two leading up to my visit, so there was a LOT of water on the trail - it was a swampy mess." — psychikingjes • Jun 2, 2018
