Drove up Evans Mountain Rd. and parked at the Evans Family Cemetery. There is a snowmobile trail immediately across from the cemetery, but I walked up a few hundred feet and took another trail that cut in. The hike to the summit is quick. About 1/4 mile up and 1/4 mile back out. Very dry at the top. Found some ripe blueberries which is unseasonably early. Decent view of Blue Job and Sanders Ledge from the top. Trails are wide enough and even graveled to the point where a baby stroller could do alright.

My husband and I live in Strafford and his mother is an Evans. My husbands grandfather was John Evans. All related to and from Evans Mountain. For many years they all met up on the mountain yearly for a family reunion and to pick up the cemetery and adding the stone in the front. When my husband was a boy, the original farmhouse and barn was there. Sadly it collapsed and most of it was removed. The first Evans made establishment on Evans Mountain in the 1600’s. He owned all of the mountain. All the way down to Bow lake. He had a trail that is still there that he would take his wagon and go down the mountain to get water. When their oldest son became an adult, he built a house not far down from his father and mother. The Evans owner of the mountain house as a Baptist minister and a as very well loved in his small community. When he passed away his wife went to live with her son down the road. My husband could give you a lot of information on Evans Mountain and his family were the first to own property in Strafford. There is so much more information that we could provide. We still go to the cemetery once a year and we climb to the summit. It’s wonderful to be able to have that part of history in your family.
