"A gated gravel lane winds steeply uphill through Pennsylvania State Game Land #51–a pleasant forested area deep in the Laurel Highlands. The lane ends at the base of Elk Rock, so the last stretch is an easy scramble up the rocky face. Elk Rock is tall, but the trees are taller, so views are limited. Met a docile timber rattlesnake on the descent. I think I was more pleased to make his acquaintance than he was to make mine. Many swarming bugs in the mountains due to recent rains.
