"The uphill run to the Castillo de Huércal-Overa follows a steady incline on concrete, leading to the historic fortress. Built in the second half of the 14th century, the castle was originally a Nasrid watchtower, designed to alert against approaching threats. Later excavations revealed that it was more than just a tower—it included fortified walls, living quarters, and defensive structures, making it a key stronghold in the region. One of the most notable discoveries inside the castle is the "tree of life" motif, an intricate geometric design carved into the plaster, reflecting Islamic artistic traditions. The site remains an important historical landmark, offering views over Huércal-Overa and the surrounding landscape. " — belgianIbex • May 31, 2025
