I have been eyeing this one for a while. I finally decided that 12/15/19, a bright Sunday was the time to do it. I've been reading on Peakbagger that people usually go up from Wrightwood between Jensen's Market and the Post Office up a dirt track, but I was in the mood for a cross-country challenge. I parked at the junction of Angeles Crest Hwy and Wright Mtn Rd. I crossed the highway into Sheep Creek's wash heading northwest to the 3rd gully from the southeastern toe of the ridge and ascended to the west-southwest steeply. It was mostly steep class 1, but there were a couple tricky class-2 rocks. Bushwhacking was relatively minor. Near the top of the gully, I tried to jump to a connecting ridge to join the main ridge, but it was way too thick with manzanita, so I hopped into the ditch right next to it and made it to the main ridge where I found the old dirt track. I followed it north, and then it wavered to the northwest, became faint at times, heading up and over a few false summits, finally reaching the summit which has a tiny rock pile and a large thicket of Flannelbush (California Fremontia). Views to Blue Ridge (Wright Mountain, Mountain High) are pretty neat. I then headed to what I thought was my main ascent gully, but I quickly found out that it was the 2nd gully from the highway. This gully had way much more bushwhacking and a few more rock scrambles borderlining on class-3 in some spots, but I avoided having to go class-3 by very meticulous maneuvering, and by such, kept it at class-2. I made it out of the gully to the wash and followed the wash to Angeles Crest and made it back to my car in one piece! It was hairy at times, but a great outdoors experience nonetheless. Overall, the hike was about 3.4 mi round-trip with about 1,480' elevation gain. The weather was crisp with a wintry chill in the air, and the breeze was invigorating!! Days like this were meant to be hiked in one of my favorite mountain ranges: the San Gabriel Mountains!!

Way to go Brian! Looks like I will be following in your steps once again.

Thanks! I am dreaming up a quick Christmas Eve Hike after work, but not yet sure what summit(s) to hit. With luck and a break in next week's storms, maybe a lower Angeles NF peak (below 6,000'). Maybe some random, unnamed summits along Angeles Crest before Chilao!

Sounds like your diabolical hiking mind is formulating a scheme!
