"Short, steep hike through the trees up the northside of the mountain. No trailhead or trail and getting there requires a high clearance vehicle . Others may want to start from Forest road 66 near the sign pointing at the peak which is on the southside of the mountain. There's a benchmark plus a summit log hidden inside a piece of rusted metal next to the benchmarker. Getting there: In the small community of Datil turn south off US-60 onto NM-14. Several miles later you will see a sign for Forest Road 66 which starts on Crosby Road. Crosby Road is a maintained, wide gravel road, East Sugarloaf Mtn is clearly visible ahead as you drive down it. Crosby Road ends at the forest boundary as does county maintenance. FR-66 is a dirt road and its condition will vary. Should it be wet don't even try to proceed. The road will pass along the south side of East Sugarloaf Mtn with a sign pointing to the mountain. You may want to start from there as the road only gets worse. I don't know if there's a trail but if so its not signed." — fredbrown585 • Mar 28, 2021
