"Left car a short way up Via del Pantano, in a parking space just beyond fountain. A fairly straightforward, twisty walk up on a fairly clear track. This does not lead to the summit, and I struck off it a little too early to get to the high point, so descended and proceeded further. To get to the highest point curling around to be in full view of the shallow basin of Pantano di Bassiano (water in it this time I was in the area, dry and muddy last time I saw it).
Pondered some over the name. "Dorso" means back (of), Dosso more rise or bump. I think the latter is more sensible here, as it is a distinct hump, separate from Trinita and Bufala, and even the slightly higher hill beyond to the south west. Haven't really worked out what Ospedale means in this context. Unlikely there was ever a hospital here, but it could mean a sort of flat area where equipment was repaired. This would lend it self to Dorso more than Dosso, in the sense of back of the working area. (Update: archaic: Ospizio per forestieri; asilo, ricovero.)" — vygodski • Oct 9, 2024
