"This was an attempted approach from claw creek in winter while the road is open. The route would shave 5km off the regular route but needs to be done when snow is low, as some slopes are avi prone. There are several opportunities to cliff out, I land marked on the approach to try to hit the ridge via a scree slope. I failed to consider the massive amounts of scree involved and the section lost elevation where you descend towards the Devils Punch Bowl. The effort to move through the scree slopes is much greater than the effort if you take the regular route, would not recommend following my track. I bailed at the small scramble section due to ice and snow. The gullies were perfect for climbing by kick steps, I think the timing is great because the scree is frozen, the overhead hazard is non existent and the snow trapped in the gullies is safe for kick stepping. Will try again via the regular route." — justinj • Dec 29, 2024

"Unable to cross the last river crossing with my SUV we had to add a couple extra km walking and another river crossing by foot. 4 total. Summited Bastion ridge with high winds. Hard packed snow and Ice on upper slopes. type 2 traverse to devils head with the incredibly high winds (80+km/h). Sugary snow made climbing the south gully slow and difficult. We cleared the devils horns and was getting late with the extra distance and snow conditions, so we opted to turn around before attempting the crux gully. " — ken_hercules • Oct 22, 2019
