"Went from Garrigill in order to take in some of the lead mining history in the area. Took the Pennine Way all the way to the summit in 30mph relentless wind. Gregory's hut provided a nice break from the wind before bagging the summit. Returned back to Garrigill on the same route with a backpack full of rock samples I had plundered from the old spoil heaps making for a heavy trudge back to the car... about 16 miles in total there and back including time spent exploring the mines. "A warm sunny, but breezy day, we set off from Garrigill village on a long trek across the moors to 3 peaks, - Cross Fell 893m, the highest point on the Pennine chain of hills and Great Dun Fell and Little Dun Fell. On a clear day, you can see both the east and west coasts from this chain of Hills, but today it was clear, but slightly hazy. The walk to Cross fell is approx 12 kms, with a further 3 to Great Dun Fell, with the return trek almost the same length. There is a mountain bothy called Gregs hut that is close to the summit of Cross Fell, that is used for overnight stops, if necessary" — davidlong • May 27, 2012
