"Cone Peak Road was closed temporarily due to weather which added an unexpected 10.6 miles to our hike. Started at 11am. Found the faint unmaintained trail at the end of the first main switchback to Twin Peak. There were several people camping on top of Cone Peak. Got back to the car at 6:15. "This was a crazy trip. Left from our camp on Forest Route 21S03 around 6:30. Headed up the decent Carrizo Trail, but managed to lose it around Carrizo Spring. After bushwhacking for 45 minutes we picked it up again and followed it to the Coast Ridge in short order.
Wanting to avoid dropping 750 ft down just to climb back up 1000 ft, we left the trail for the north ridge of Cone Peak. This turned out to be easy for the first half and then class 2/3 over very loose, crappy rock for the second half. We hit the summit at exactly noon.
Not keen on dropping back to the north ridge, we descended to the closed-to-cars Cone Peak Road via the main Cone Peak trail and took it south for 2 miles to the San Antonio River "Trail".
The TH sign half buried in brush should have been warning enough, but we began descending, crossing about 20 blowdowns before reaching Fresno Camp at the river. From here, the trail pretty much disappeared completely. There were hints of tread and a few old ribbons here and there, but it was almost completely bushwhacking.
