"Came up a long ridge from Jawbone Canyon. Lots of dirt bikes at the saddle near the top. Clear views north to Owens Peak in the southern Sierra and south to Mount Baldy - the recent rain really helped the air quality. Bonus: learned what a chuckwalla is." — edg • Jan 14, 2018
"I hiked Chuckwalla and Cross as a loop from Jawbone Canyon. This entire area is now closed off from OHV use due to the LA DWP wind farm. Hikers have to slip through a barbed-wire fence to access the area, but will find perfect desert solitude on the other side.
Both of these peaks are awesome: steep routes, 360 degree visibility, barren desert landscape, ridgetops, canyon bottoms, juniper groves, verdant springs, and historical mining ruins. It was warm for early March, making the hike a little harder and sweatier than I was expecting, but there was a small stream running in the canyon bottom, so I was able to cool off and hydrate. I took the awesome scree slope down from Cross Mountain, making the descent quick and fun. Finally, ran in to some cattle randomly in the desert near a spring." — klotito • Mar 12, 2017
"4WD and high clearance vehicle required to get here! On the way up, our group of 11 encountered a rattler curled up on the trail, apparently still lethargic from the night; it didn't move or rattler or acknowledge us as we gingerly made our way around it. (It was gone on our descent.)" — HikerMark • Mar 21, 2015
