"Well. If there ever is an example of what not to do, I'm your guy. I severly underestimated this climb but at the same time overestimated it too, if that makes any sense. My friend Ryan and I ended up having a late start from Massachusetts which complicated our time factor for our descent, and we started our climb at exactly 3:30pm. The weather however was honestly perfect. The day was 64 degrees which made our ascent enjoyable and the skys were mostly clear giving us plenty of view and light at a distance. Conditions on our way up the trail was mostly snow pack so we had no issue with deep snow. However, we messed up by not having microspikes in our packs we realized halfway up, but digging in the heels and sides of our boots made up for it, especially in the final steep mile stretch towards the top. At some point we were confronted with a light sprinkle but even then the will to make it to the summit was not deterred. Our summit was around 7:30pm with just enough time to observe the valley around us grow dark by the setting sun and grab a few good pictures. "Great day out on Tecumseh, skiing was bad so I hiked it. Very steep, quads were burning going down. Honestly, probably better in the winter, because the paths are not rooted. If you do it in the winter microspikes are a must. There are a few river crossings, so be careful. "My first time hiking up and skiing down a 4000 Footer. I hiked up with a friend, and to make things a little more interesting we decided to race back to the parking lot from the Tecumseh/Sosman Trail Junction, him via the Tecumseh Trail and me hiking over to the ski trails and skiing down. We got to the Waterville Valley ski area just after the lifts opened and set off along the Mt. Tecumseh Trail around 9:30am. The temperature was in the teens with no wind, although the skies were completely overcast. I was a little worried that the snow flurries we experienced at the beginning of the hike would obscure the views from the summit, as the wildfire smoke did the last time I hiked Tecumseh, but luckily it abated about half an hour in. The trail was nicely packed-down; we were able to comfortably wear spikes the entire way to the summit, although I did bring a pair of snowshoes. Along with those, I also had my skis, ski boots, and a helmet, making this easily the heaviest pack I had ever worn for a day hike. The weight of the pack slowed me down, especially on the unyielding uphill section after the lookout at the halfway point. "Incredibly well packed snow pretty much the entire way. The last 400 ft climb had probably about 2 ft of snow, snowshoes might have been helpful, but was able to totally ring it with spikes. Otherwise a pretty chill winter hike." — adutta • Jan 10, 2026

"Took Snows Mt. Trail CCW. The southern half was well blazed and easy to follow up to both viewpoints. The northern half coming back was a different story. The yellow blazes were mostly non-existent, which made route finding head scratching in many places, especially due to fallen autumn leaves.
