Climbing the 100 peaks in the Bulgers challenge is recognized as an exceptional achievement in Washington's mountains. Originally conceived in the 1970's by a small gang of climbers (shortly after all USGS quads became available for the first time), it includes the top 100 mountains by elevation in Washington with a minimum of 400 ft prominence (except an 800 ft minimum prominence for volcano sub-peaks). It also has several exceptions to swap in popular classic peaks. It hasn't been updated based on new elevation surveys since its creation, and likely never will. The Bulgers is timeless and requires a multitude of mountaineering and climbing skills, as well as a sheer craving for Type II fun.
