Stretched above the bucolic college town of New Paltz, New York lies the Shawangunk Ridge (known in the climbing world as the Gunks, the epicenter of eastern US rock climbing). Along the ridge, a huge trail network provides easy access to dramatic viewpoints and "peaks". This challenge spans the Mohonk Preserve, Minnewaska State Park, and Sam's Point Preserve. Only a 90 min drive from NYC -- a quick escape to miles of inviting trails and sweeping views of the Hudson Valley.

"Reached it on loop #2 of the Rock The Ridge 50 mile run/hike fund raiser. Beautiful day to spend some quality time with my friend Christy, who flew out from Colorado, and get in a loooong hike for the Mohonk preserve." — Nimblefoot • Sep 25, 2021
"Hiked from Sam's Point parking area to Route 55/44 (end of Jenny Lane Trail) on the Shawangunk Ridge Trail. Cloudy most of the day. Rocky trail, and these are slick rocks when damp! Lots of bear sign, but no bears. Water is pretty low, but available still - Rainbow Falls is just a trickle." — PJSelmer • Aug 17, 2019
