Explore the uncrowded alpine terrain of northern Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. This advanced peak challenge is based on the NPS's official map and includes all peaks lying north and west of US Highway 34 that are shown on the map. Includes a string of scrambles in the Mummy Range and remote summits in the Never Summer Mountains. Most peaks in this challenge require remote, off-trail travel over rough terrain. You'll often be the only one out there. A companion challenge to the Rocky Mountain National Park South Peak Challenge. "Started a little late so it was hot and I learned that though you can hike the very steep climber’s access route to approach Twin Owls, it is not something you can summit without the appropriate climbing equipment ☹️ The terrain is quite rocky in sections but the hiking was nice, and the trail running conditions were solid. "I came over from Tombstone Ridge by way of the Ute trail. Much of the snow was melted off Trail Ridge Road and it was fun to walk in the middle of the road with no traffic. I headed north on the road until I reached a huge drift, then departed the road towards Sundance. The summit was breezy and I didn't stay long. "This was my first adventure into the Never Summer Range in RMNP. It was more of a scouting hike for next summer, so I decided to hike to the park's northern boundary to familiarize myself with the area. From the Colorado River trailhead I went up Little Yellowstone Canyon to LaPoudre Pass, summitted Neota, Thunder Mtn, Lulu Mtn., and descended Thunder Pass back to the trailhead. "I came over from Tileston, bushwhacking across the seemingly never ending ridge. Bighorn has fantastic views of the park and I wish I had brought my DSLR! "I approached Sheep from the Cow Creek trailhead at the old McGraw Ranch in RMNP. There's no trail, so the bushwhacking started immediately from the ranch. The east ridge was long but eventually led to the viewless summit." — WaxDr • Aug 6, 2016
