"I hiked Hines and Topatopa from Sisar Canyon. At 21 mi / 6000 ft, this is a long outing with a healthy amount of elevation gain. It's really not too bad though, since the vast majority of the mileage is on very good road and trail. With the exception of the steep, class 2 ascent up the ridge to the Hines summit and the drop off Topatopa back to the road, the miles go by pretty quick.
This was a perfect early spring day; clear and cool with a consistent breeze; the canyon trail was mostly shaded and the creek was flowing strongly alongside. Past the trail camp, the route climbs steeply up to the more gently graded fire roads. The climb up Hines is by far the most interesting stretch - steep with a brief knife-edge section and some good scrambling at the top. It was so clear that from the top I could see the snow-capped summit of Mt. Baldy 85 mi away." — klotito • Mar 19, 2017
"New Year's Day hike. Cool and mostly clear. This is a nice hike - a straight forward but strenuous walk up the fire road then a bit of scrambling at the end. I would do this one again!" — klotito • Jan 1, 2017
"Perfect conditions, nice and cool. We started at the Sisar Canyon Road trailhead, headed up and over to Hines. On the return, we hit nearby "Creampuff Peak" (6486' on the topo, super-fun), and then crossed over Topatopa Bluff. Stats for the day: 22.5 miles and 5965 feet of gain." — HikerMark • Apr 30, 2016
"Beautiful peak, fun scramble at the top. If you use the HPS Route 1 directions as I did, please note that the wire gate at 3.7 miles on Nordhoff Ridge Road is no longer there. The route up the ridge to the peak (the point where you leave Nordhoff Ridge Road) is quite clear, but because I was looking for a wire gate, I obliviously kept on going, adding an extra 4 miles to my hike. Oh well...call me clueless! I backtracked and arrived at the peak shortly before sunset, so the view was magnificent." — HikerMark • Feb 13, 2015
"4 miles and 2100 ft+ (one way) from Rose Valley Campground (if you don't take a 4x4 to the base via Nordhoff Ridge Rd). Last 50 ft is class 4 climbing from the west. There is a simple route from the southwest." — srphilip • Jul 27, 2011
