In a state literally named "Mountain", this is its ultimate peak challenge. Includes classic Montana peaks from the book Peakbagging Montana by Montana mountain guru Cedron Jones. Included peaks are based on no objective criteria but instead on Jones' incredibly intimate knowledge of Montana's peaks gained from decades of ascents. "Excellent way to spend a Labor Day and to kick of Public Lands Month. The rock formations at the top of the mountain are unique to view and climb on. Well constructed trail to the top -- biggest challenge is the rutted road leading to trailhead (you can avoid by parking at the bottom and walking the mile up). Smoky day, but views of several of Montana's ranges from the top, with some old structuring still left from a lookout. Part of the National Recreation Trail system of public lands." — MarmotHead • Sep 1, 2025
"Exploration into the CDT area of Montana and another range high point. Although there are plenty of diseased pine trees, the whitebark pine population here has some healthy ones that are hanging on. Unique spot on a map, not one visited often, long drive and short hike, but well worth the experience." — MarmotHead • Aug 30, 2025
"Just an epic trip for PrairieDweller and me -- something we have been eyeing for four years. Permits came through, time on the work schedule cooperated, and we made it through customs in time to catch the ferry. The logistics are difficult for this trip between international travel, packing, and campsite selection. Tough route with bouldering and loose scree pounding on you during the descent. Only a couple technical moves on the traverse route, but nothing too spicy. Traverse of the Stony Indians is probably one of the most surreal summit experiences I have had -- well worth the effort to get up this might piece of rock known as Cleveland! PS -- take a look down that north face when you are on top; you will never forget that exposure." — MarmotHead • Aug 23, 2025
"Annual Labor Day trip with Tyler B. Fantastic weather and climbing conditions made for a perfect outing in the mountains. Steep approach via a climber's trail to gain the west/NW ridgeline, with some Class 3 scrambling near the summit. Lots of wildlife on this route -- mountain goats and ruffed grouse provided several photo opportunities. Busy day on the holiday weekend -- good to see people of all ages getting out!" — MarmotHead • Sep 1, 2024
"A new experience for the Prairie Dweller and I -- combine a mountain bike route with a climbing route! We saddled up the bikes at the Rattlesnake Recreation Trail 515 TH and worked our way up a moderate grade 15 miles to the Wilderness boundary -- stashed the bikes there and then continued to hike in a couple miles to set up basecamp. From our camp near trail 515, we climbed up to a bowl just to the south of McLeod Peak and then worked up to the main W/SW ridge and on up to the top. Weather was mostly dominated by nimbostratus clouds enveloping the ridge and peak area, with light rain showers and low visibility." — MarmotHead • Sep 3, 2023
