In a state literally named "Mountain", this is its ultimate peak challenge. Includes classic Montana peaks from the book Peakbagging Montana by Montana mountain guru Cedron Jones. Included peaks are based on no objective criteria but instead on Jones' incredibly intimate knowledge of Montana's peaks gained from decades of ascents. "A new experience for the Prairie Dweller and I -- combine a mountain bike route with a climbing route! We saddled up the bikes at the Rattlesnake Recreation Trail 515 TH and worked our way up a moderate grade 15 miles to the Wilderness boundary -- stashed the bikes there and then continued to hike in a couple miles to set up basecamp. From our camp near trail 515, we climbed up to a bowl just to the south of McLeod Peak and then worked up to the main W/SW ridge and on up to the top. Weather was mostly dominated by nimbostratus clouds enveloping the ridge and peak area, with light rain showers and low visibility." — MarmotHead • Sep 3, 2023
"9/2/23: Paul and I camped at Half Moon CG for 5 nights. On Friday we hiked up above Twin Lakes and reconnoitered the possible approaches up Crazy Peak having very limited beta. The North Ridge looked extremely aesthetic and pretty doable with one lower dihedral being questionable but apparently avoidable if necessary. Ultimately I left the decision to Paul who was already contemplating sitting this one out. He decided that he was game for the West Ridge and so it was. We headed up the lower ridge above Blue Lake and its upper basin and skirted the glacier below the West Ridge saddle. A couple and their dog, Momo, followed along with us up to the saddle. This was generally a great approach route except for the final 300’ from the glacier up to the saddle spur ridge (very steep, loose glacier till with large, fast falling scree). Lots of rockfall! After a well-earned lunch break, Paul and I continued towards the false summit along the West Ridge. This is one of the most spectacular ridge hikes in the Rockies. The Crazies are some of the most interesting and aesthetic peaks and ridges and the eye candy was a great complement to the easy Class 3 scrambling along the way.

"Not enough information about this route online...
In short for the approach Sky Top both ways is far easier. Terrain is easier, and it is also prettier with more possible camp sites. It looks like on the topo map that Aero Lakes has more trail but this isn't true to reality. The use trails to Sky Top are well developed and beyond a couple water crossings pretty much just walking. Aero Lakes going from Lower to Upper, and Upper to Camp are exhausting boulder hops that require route finding.
That said I did Sky Top up and Aero down to simply see more of the area.
Now on the climb itself. The Southwest Ramp is no bones about it a basic class 3 climb. It requires simple route finding and basic scrambling. That said, I did it when all the snow was melted. If you also choose to do it with melted snow (Labor day-ish) then you should avoid the fixed lines people seem to leave the just scramble. None of the scramble is exposed. Finding the ramp itself is easy as well. As far as the dreaded 'rock fall' I can honestly say that its nothing special. If you've done Middle Teton you've experienced worse. Stay together, where a helmet, and be aware of parties ahead and behind you. The exp..." — Irrationalist • Sep 5, 2022
"A long traverse of a grand, open alpine ridge on this hike. Even with the thick smoke from summer's fires, the views and immensity of the landscape were precious. My hiking partner and I playfully nicknamed this route the "Goat Nipple Traverse", taking in four peaks (two of which we really would consider peaks on the ridgeline) in our ridge walk. Had summitted West Goat 8 years ago by the Mono Creek TH, which was the route we descended to complete a loop hike." — MarmotHead • Sep 4, 2022
"A beautiful late summer day in Montana's mountains. Smoke from Idaho fires started to settle in as day progressed, limiting views of neighboring ranges. Glacial evidence on the landscape from the flanks and top of this peak are amazing. Nice to summit here again after 14 years absence, this time by the southern route (northern route used previously)." — MarmotHead • Sep 3, 2022
