"Quickie hike with Lincoln's class. I led the very short trek up to the top. Northern Loop to Terrace to the summit. I doubt it was a mile. I wanted to take them a longer way down, but the school only allowed for a short time out. It's hard to even want to claim this as a hike, but a summit is a summit, I guess. "It was quite icy on this hike. I gave my wife my spikes because she was having a bit of trouble with it. My trail runners had plenty of tread to manage well enough. My feet got really cold though. It was about 28 degrees on the climb and warmed up about 5 degrees by the time we descended. Cool little loop at the top goes to a viewpoint, although you couldn't see much up there. A winter storm was coming in and it was so foggy we couldn't even see the cell tower on the summit until we were practically right next to it. Decent first hike of '22." — mikewilliamsjr • Jan 6, 2022
"Decided to check out some new stuff. Drove up from Rowley, MA to check out Streaked Mtn. Short hike up, only 0.6 miles one way. It has some nice views along the summit. Lots of active towers. The fire tower is blocked off. After this hike, went off to do Zircon next. " — newenglandwarrior • Aug 27, 2021
"Short but fairly steep hike on a warm day that was becoming humid. I parked for free on Mountain St., just west of the Bates College campus. It starts out as grass, then pine needles over dirt, and then a very rocky climb to the top. The rocky section, I found fairly challenging. There is a USGS marker at the summit, as well as a short brick structure. Unfortunately, there were some empty beer cans, broken glass and some graffiti along the way. If the trees were trimmed, there would be views in nearly all directions, but as it is there are some broken good views from the top, particularly of downtown Auburn across the river and of hills north of Lewiston. I descended more slowly than I went up; the rocky surface has to be negotiated carefully. It's a nice opportunity for an urban hike that packs some challenge into a short distance. "Trail was packed down pretty well and it was cold out, so I was able to do it with spikes and not snowshoes. Some pretty extensive ice just under the snow, especially when you reach the open ledges and rock. The spikes worked great through all of it. Just inches off of the packed track though, you get into the soft stuff and would be up to your knees or worse, and there were signs of others having gotten into that. Slow going up, because it was my first hike of the year. At the top couldn't see much because a snow storm had moved in and everything was clouded out by the falling snow. Made great time down because of the snow pack, didn't have to step down over rocks and roots, and could pretty much just walk it. Great first day out for 2017." — mikewilliamsjr • Mar 24, 2017
