"Started at 3:45 AM with a headlamp to beat the heat. A couple heading down passed me early on. The area is sketchy, and people apparently party on Lake Mead at this time of night. There was litter all over the side of the road leading to the trailhead. Also tagged Frenchman NE at 5:02 AM and Frenchman NW at 5:39 AM, reaching the main summit at 6:55 AM. The false peaks ended up being more effort and adding much more time than anticipated. It's scrambling for most of the way up, at least the ways I went. I think I picked a bad descent route for the NW Summit. To reach the true summit of Frenchman, you have to climb up and go around the gate. There is an exposed ridge with ropes blocking the radio towers, but the highest spot looks to be just outside of anything closed, so no trespassing required. This is a truly beautiful hike. You can see just about everything from the top, and the night view of the strip is spectacular. Trekking pole is recommended because of loose terrain. I saw my first Vegas snake on the trail on the way up, too, so beware." — AFFIDAVID • May 16, 2026
"This was no joke. Much more of a workout than expected, and some minor pathfinding is involved. Where the official trail is is anyone's guess for much of the time. I could not find a register at the summit, and the other people there said they hadn't seen one, either. The descent is much easier than the ascent but still difficult because of the loose rock. All told, it wasn't actually that pleasant of a hike compared to what else the Vegas area has to offer. The views are beautiful at the summit, but that's a given at that height." — AFFIDAVID • May 2, 2026
"Skipped the last day of a conference in Vegas to get on top of an ultra-prominent peak. Time well spent. AK and I were up and down in 8h 17m. Some fast people up there! Met a guy who completed the loop in 6 hours, but he said it was very dangerous!
Snow was ice on the morning ascent. Spikes were probably the efficient choice, but there were some sections where crampons would have been the safe choice. Cold at the top, below freezing, snowed on our descent. Warmed up in the switchbacks.
Great day in the mountains!" — zachmitch • Apr 24, 2026
"Explored an east face route to the peak today. Cool knife-edges instead of the scree slope I saw someone else post on a website about. They were a little scarier in the high winds but made them work. Since the route was a return via the dirt road I threw in my first summits of NE Frenchman Peak and NW Frenchman Peak so that I can say I've done all the different peaks on the mountain. "Nice to finally tick this one off. Meandered through Sandstone Quarry with Lisa and scouted a few sport climbs. We rejoined the normal trail after some minor bushwacking and stayed on course until the descent. While coming down stick to the left and you'll see a cairn marking a fun class 3 drainage area that is more direct than the marked trail. " — MikeERodriguez • Feb 17, 2026
