"A beautiful day for a hike, Corey and Anthony and I planned to hike out to Stack Rock. The new trailhead is very nice, and the trail leading from it is so much more scenic than the old logging road. Astoundingly clear skies over the Treasure Valley, could see far into Oregon. When we reached our destination I scrambled up the large granite boulders for the first time. Having committed several local climber's internet guides to memory, the scramble was fun and welcoming but still had enough dangerous exposure to get the blood pumping. Most people appear to summit Stack Rock with no climbing gear, and the route up is starting to show some wear. The last move is still a pain in the neck, literally; I almost pulled my shoulder muscle trying to get myself up. After I got back down, we hung around and took some pictures, then another group wanted to go up which got Corey excited about it. He ended up leading most of the way!
On the way back we hiked with the same group we'd met and that Corey had climbed with. Always nice to meet agreeable strangers to hike with, even during this weird time where, I suppose, you're not supposed to. Idaho isn't hard hit so I wasn't too concerned, but o..." — robkleffner • May 24, 2020
"Boise not doing a great job of social distancing. I took the busy Sweet Connie trail until I was at the base of the peak, then did the lonely mile up to the top. Great views of the Stack Rock ridge, and an absolutely beautiful spring day to be out. You can tell this year will be drier than last already though." — robkleffner • Mar 21, 2020
"Good Friday trip up to the cross. Hiked with mom and dad, getting them prepared for a little more elevation this summer. Very clear day, could see the Owyhees and beyond, clear skies all around except for the farmers apparently burning out at the other end of the valley. Luckily the wind was blowing it all west into Oregon..." — robkleffner • Apr 19, 2019
"Part of a route I am calling 'Over the Mountain', a loop that touches the summit of both Shafer Butte and Doe (Deer?) Point. Very clear day, the smoke is finally blowing out of Idaho for now and all that's left is the usual valley smog. A good, refreshing hike: Tempest trail -> Shafer summit ridge -> short scramble down the cabin traverse -> Cabin traverse -> Basin -> Pioneer lodge via a grossly boring and shadeless uphill swathe that you cannot miss. Significantly clear views of the Trinities, Steel Mountain, and I believe even many of the Sawtooths and possibly Castle Peak." — robkleffner • Sep 16, 2018
"Quick training hike to make sure I had the juice to attempt Thompson Peak. Went with Megan Lacy, who ran the whole thing and a little extra. The top of the peak has, sadly, been a victim of fire this year. Here's to hoping it recovers well next year" — robkleffner • Aug 20, 2018
