"A slightly frustrating day as a bit of faffing meant I ended heading up this rather than Serra Dolcedorme, which I'd have preferred to prioritise. Nonetheless a good day's hiking, leaving from Colle Impiso, following the track at first (missed the actual trailhead as I was trying to escape two coach loads of tourists who had just been disgorged and were busy singing, shouting, and pissing everywhere), which eventually goes south for a long while, dropping to 1500m before rising to 1700m at the Piano Guadalino. From here the route rises along the west side of this hill, carrying on SSE, before doubling back, more or less, behind the rocky outcrops to gradually arrive at the top to the East. Returned by the same route. Found the trail for the last section easier. Mostly ok sign posted.
I was tempted to continue to Dolcedorme but was dissuaded by poor visibility at the top and the threat of rain. And I was glad I didn't because I was cream crackered by the end. Some 16km in all." — vygodski • May 26, 2024
"From Lago Laudemio to the north east, following track which runs more or less alongside the (disused) ski lift, to around 1850m at the saddle with Timpa Scazzariddo. From here the path continues south, then doubles back climbing just off the ridgeline to the top. Fairly straightforward. Quite a few flies due in part to the number of cattle, no doubt. Great views, especially of the sanctuary on top of Monte Sirino (note that the massif is called Sirino, but Papa is the highest point). From here descended more directly to the saddle down the first ravine next to the ante-cima which was steep but unproblematic, and went up Scazzariddo.
Saw lots of spring flowers, including daisies, buttercups, violets, (plus some very yellow gorse on the approach in the car), plus others I can't name, and some large snowball fungi." — vygodski • May 24, 2024
"From Valico della Serra walking down the wide gravel road to Fonte della Moscosa, sheltered through mature forest. From the font, took the rout to the left, up a lush green valley arriving at the Madonnina statue. This is 1838m. From here, to the right, and arriving on the open slope of what I understand to be Monte Piano, diagonal across this scree and bending round the nose here to continue up the other side. Arriving at the sella, continued along the crest, first skirting Il Gendarme on the way to Mt Viglio but climbing it on the return. Returned slightly lower on west side of crest and descending along the crested slope of Monte Piano and then doglegging to Fonte Della Moscosa and back, uphill unfortunately.
Saw choughs. Clear day. Great views onto Furcino. Scary on Gendarme and the edges, many of which are actually overhangs!!!

"From Campo Imperatore up to the Sella of Monte Aquila. Then took the route via the scree slopes (still some snow patches making them quite perilous) up the steep climb to Sella di Brecciaio. Then took the via normale, reaching the summit from the North. Hard going. Took 5.4 hours all in - windy but sunny too. " — vygodski • Jun 29, 2019
"The plan was to summit Corno Grande but locals' talk of the wind being too strong gave my companion cold feet. The wind was strong, but I didn't feel it was too bad. I wonder how the naysayers would fare on a winter walk on the South Downs. Anyway, erring on the side of caution we walked up Monte Aquila instead, the obvious route from Campo Imperatore. Fine views. Plans to take in a few of the other lower lying peaks were subverted by partner's bout of vertigo. Will return. Too spectacular not to. Disappointing but..." — vygodski • Sep 27, 2018
