"Starting at the Allegany Stone Tower, I planned to ride a full loop of the Stone Tower Singletrack Trail and then bushwhack up to Peak 2,243. The impassable blowdown on the trail had other ideas. I took a detour in one bad spot, only to find another tree down elsewhere. I gave up at that point, as I had other places to go and didn't want to waste any more time here. Maybe I'll return for a snowshoe hike next winter. " — theascent • Jun 4, 2023
"My final hike in Allegany State Park was to Christian Hollow Overlook and Townsend Benchmark, with a couple of stops at the closed Summit Firetower. This was more of a nature walk than a proper hike, as the trails were mostly flat and wide. Lots of people were out walking their dogs here.
The view from Christian Hollow Overlook was one of the best I've found in the park -- from higher ground at least. There was also a ski hut at the summit that a group of guys were occupying at the time. Wouldn't mind going back there in the future to spend some time there myself. You couldn't ask for a nicer setting!
Locating Townsend Benchmark in the woods was a nice surprise. I wasn't expecting to find it. Since it's a raised benchmark, it wasn't a terribly difficult find. " — theascent • May 30, 2020
"Tried to make it to an overlook of the Alleghany Reservoir shown on the map, but all views were completely obscurred by trees. Most of the party turned back once they realized there were no overlooks but I pushed forward with my dad to the summit fire tower, long abandoned. The trail east of the fire tower was completely unmaintained, and we had to scramble over at least 50 massive logs in the last 2.5 miles after the summit. Spotted a raccoon on the way out but not much else. " — Christopher • Jun 9, 2012
