I have been to the top about 10 times over the years. There is a good trail from the south side, it is a rocky trail so good boots are required, but in about 1.5 hours you can be at the top. If for leisure, put in the extra couple hours to get to the inside cone of the volcano -- up around the numerous rock outcroppings. You do not know the cone is there unless you go up through the rock faces.

Always take a 4x4 into that area, especially if it is wet. I have hunted it, been up in summer, fall and with a foot of snow. Not too overwhelming, nice views. It is considered wilderness, so no ATVs.

Stay off the private land on the west side.
