I started the hike off the Joseph Mine Road which starts at the Ojo Caliente Hot Springs and Resort. To get to the hot springs, turn onto Los Banos Drive (NM-414) off US-285 in Ojo Caliente, marked by a big sign pointing the way to the hot springs. The road appears to end at the resort parking lot. If you continue on you will see a dirt road heading up a steep slope - that's Joseph Mine Road. Its a HC-4WD road. The road winds around heading generally toward the mountain; then starts heading east. There is no trail so the route is up to you. Expect lots of cactus, rock outcrops, rocky terrain with some loss of elevation as you make your way up.
