To get to the trailhead: Turn off US-285 onto a signed forest road 558. Cerro Azul is clearly visible as you head down FR-558 toward it. Remain on FR-558 for about five miles then make a left on FR-556. About a mile later FR-556 will head north while FR-556F continues straight, take FR-556F. FR-556F winds back and forth as it works it way towards the southern slope of Cerro Azul. There is no official trailhead so pull over when it appears you're not going to get any closer and you're centered on the southern slope. Make your own track from there. Road condition: Loose sand, uneven road surface and some ruts are present although much of the road is not too bad. Like most forest roads, avoid if wet.

The hike: Rocky climb up the southern slope with some outcrops that require light scrambling. Three survey markers on the large rock marking the highpoint. Nice views.
