"A HC-4WD may or may not be necessary depending on the chosen route. High clearance is necessary regardless. Don't even think of visiting if the road surface is wet. None of the roads are marked so a GPS is a must. Quite a network of roads including ones that don't appear on maps. I accessed the area from NM-53 onto CR-42. From CR-42 I turned onto Cerro Americano Road (signed) then at the next junction went left. Along CR-42 there are some road signs but once you leave it - nothing.
This area around Cerro Alto belongs to the Ramah Navajo tribe. The Navajo generally do not close their lands to outsiders which is a rarity amongst tribes. Please respect their land and people so they don't start excluding non-tribal visitors. An interesting note: Mike Garrett placed a summit log on the Mtn on 20 Apr 2019. Its almost full! Seems this mountain is very popular with the tribe who have left lots of comments. I had to replace the pencil as it was worn to a nub. " — fredbrown585 • Oct 20, 2021
