"Lots of blowdowns at the beginning. Beautiful climb up and even better view. Definitely one of the hardest non-46ers due to its challenging climbs. Not a soul seen on the trail" — drewromesser • May 3, 2024

"Great hike and trail was in good shape and dry. Definitely needs more trail markers and paint near the top. I'd recommend poles if you have them...this one is killer on the knees

"Tom, Black and I left the trailhead at 8:35 am @ +5 degrees with light winds and blue skies. Trail was in perfect condition with snowshoes to the summit. The chimney was snowed in and presented no problems. Summit was spectacular! Returned to car at 11:45 am. Great hike!" — garyogden • Feb 21, 2021

"New Year's Day hike with Jeff and Meenu. We decided to do a shorter hike to start the year. I hike this in 2016 but apparently did not summit according to my Garmin data, and I didn't remember it very well (I was so naive and unprepared too), so this was like a new hike to me, especially doing it in the winter. It was beautiful out, calm and not too cold. We used spikes but didn't need snowshoes. The chimney rock scramble was fun - that part I did remember - and the views were very nice. We started about 10 am and ended at 2 pm exactly. A great start to the year. " — kvander • Jan 1, 2021

"We tried with our kids as we had three adults but decided, with a quarter mile left, to be happy with the attempt and wait til our five year old was a bit older to tackle the top. Lovely hike and climb though. " — elizabethlovria • Oct 18, 2020

"Catamount Style! What a great day spent with friends doing what we love, A day out with the ADK Clan with some finishing up there winter LP9er challenge, Congrats finishers. Day was cloudy with some sun breaking the clouds but trails were ice covered with minimal granular snow using micros all the way up and down. I took the chance to get this one in before possible border closure, Its a tough world we live in, Till next time, everyone stay safe out there" — ramjet1963 • Mar 14, 2020

"Birthday hike (a day early). Solo. Very rocky trail, a little hard to follow after the "chimney" since it's mostly open rock, but great views from up top and lots of fun little scrambles!" — ndru-virus • Oct 14, 2019
"Needed a shorter hike to do before heading home after spending three nights at the ADK Loj. Since we were going to be enjoying a third day in a row of great weather.....clear blue sky and bright sunshine...we wanted something with good views in addition to a challenging climb. Catamount was a great choice, it was a new peak for Ed and it would be peak #2 for the LP9. The temp. was in the single digits at breakfast in the Loj then quickly rose through the teens on our way to the PA and up into the 30’s/40’s during the hike. Nice mellow start for a warmup then right into some steep trail climbs, rock scrambling and slab climbing with softening snow and ice patches to make things interesting. Spent time on top identifying many of the peaks in the greater High Peaks area and into Vermont. Had the shades but forgot the billed hat again so the day added to my already sunburned face. It was worth it for the grand views and short workout before sitting in a car for four hours." — Nimblefoot • Mar 27, 2019
"Headed up to Lake Placid with Kim on Friday night and happened to run into some friends at Dancing Bears and had some drinks. The original plan for Saturday morning was to hike Jay Mountain, but the weather was forecasted to be overcast and rainy, so I didn't want to hike the exposed ridge without views and in rain the whole time. I made the decision to hike Catamount and didn't realize that Kim had already hiked it with Kellie. We got to the trailhead around 9:30am and were the first people out on the trail. It ended up being a beautiful day minus the wind. The skies were clear and blue and if it wasn't for the wind it would have been a perfect day. This is a really nice hike, but the top part of the trail could use some more markers/cairns to mark the route. It isn't that you won't find your way to the summit, but people are finding their own way up which is destroying the fragile environment towards the summit. We didn't stay on the summit long because of the wind. We passed several groups on the way down and made it back to the car rather quickly. All in all a nice day for a hike. "Hiked with Tom. I didn't realize that I had already hiked this mountain with his sister until we made it to the small rock scramble when you leave the treeline. It was still a nice hike. Beautiful blue skies even though it was kind of windy. Foliage is well past peak with the majority of the leaves already on the ground. Still a nice day to hike and we stopped at Big Slide brewery on the way out of town for some poutine!" — Kim-Stilson • Oct 20, 2018
