"Fairly bog* standard anti-clockwise circuit, except at the end I tagged on Carn Macoul (good views of Loch Dubh) and descended out on the Gleann Lochain ‘path’ (marshy deer track) which seemed preferable to the Glen Ballach bogs. I was relieved to find no problem with the stream crossing at Dalballoch (decaying farm house now used only by sheep) and be back on a nice path about 1km after.
The nine summit peakery haul includes 3 Munros (5 till 1981 when Carn Ballach and Carn Ban got demoted)....

2) Carn Sgulain MUNRO 918m

*The word bog figures frequently in trip reports on these hills; I was fortunate in that higher up everything had been frozen solid

"Alone. I took the train from Kingussie to Newtonmore after staying at the youth hostel at Kingussie. I walked from Newtonmore Railway Station via Glen Banchor, Dalballoch, Carn Macoul, Carn Dearg (SE and NW tops) to arrive at the summit of Carn Ban. The descent was via the upper reaches of Gleann Ballach, then following Allt Fionndrigh, Glen Banchor, Newtonmore and along the road to Kingussie. Hard snow and ice above 2250´. Some mist and wind. Much soft snow by Allt Fionndrigh and rain in the valley on the return. A few deer were seen on the lower slopes and several ptarmigan on the highest part of Carn Ban." — peter43 • Feb 9, 1980
