"Today was the day to take someone, Chris, on this route that had never done it. The link-up between Burlap and Hidden worked out great. The fixed rope off of the N/NW end of Burlap proved to be easier than anticipated. It might have made it easier for Chris because I had done three times previously so I could give instructions. Before you use the rope, be sure that you are comfortable with the possibility that you could slide a little on the wall. There are some very small footholds. The descent gully back into Black Velvet Canyon has several options as to how to go down it. There are some cairns down it that actually follow a pretty good route. I have never gone the same way twice down this gully. There are a lot of options. The one thing that you are looking for....and is important to find....is a huge, dark brown boulder on a dark brown ledge (we called it the patio) just above the bottom of Black Velvet Canyon. It will come into sight as you are nearing the end of the descent gully. Stay to the left on the last section of the gully when you are approaching the patio. The descent off of the patio is down a series of ledges on the wall. Once in Black Velvet Canyon go down canyon ..." — Heartattackbruce • Oct 14, 2023
"We have been working on a route to connect Burlap Buttress and Hidden Peak by ascending the S/SE gully up to Burlap and going off the N/NE end of the summit. We were not the first to have ever done this. There is a sheer wall that you need to descend off of Burlap which at some point in time there was a fixed line but it was gone. The anchor remnants were still there. We have added a rope that you can hand line down the wall. This rope will also offer the ability to do this route in reverse. The ridge line connection between Burlap and Hidden is a fun scramble. The best exit we have found off of Hidden is down a gully on the south side of the ridge that will take you into Black Velvet canyon and out to the TH. " — Heartattackbruce • Oct 12, 2023
"Our mission was to link Burlap and Hidden. We went up the SE Gully to Burlap and dropped down on the NW end of Burlap to the ridge line that runs up to Hidden….linked! We left a fixed rope for the descent off of Burlap. We had to use a retrievable webbing on the end of it to complete the down climb. We hope to go back and adjust the rope length so that it goes all the way down. Right now, it takes you down to a large boulder landing where we used the additional webbing to complete the down climb. " — Heartattackbruce • May 9, 2023
"Tough route. GPS being annoying again today, paused twice on me which is why you see the weird straight lines , so add more miles and elevation if you plan for this route. Whiskey is nice and easy, pretty obvious where to go at all times. I went back the way I came although it looks like the other side(going into the canyon) would have gone when I got a better look at it from deeper in the canyon. Hidden requires some route finding , I believe I went up too early and was doing some side hilling. Finally found a rock stack which led me right up to hidden. Only snow I encountered was in the saddle between hidden and monument. Looks like you can go all the way around but i just climbed the face up to get to the summit of monument(pictured) . Then dropping off monument into the gully that leads to burlap buttress is extremely brushy and slow moving . Probably the hardest part of the day. Saw a flock of 52ers out there coming down burlap buttress while I was going up. The buttress requires a bit of route finding , need to just stay to the right and an exit to the summit will appear . Very fun and tough route. " — joshortman • Jan 13, 2023
