"Solo trip for me for Easter Sunday and came to climb Buckden Pike - the last time I did this I was 16 years old and staying at Buckden House for a 6th form residential so 30 years have passed - eek!
I was one of the first in the carpark and unfortunately the pay machine wasn’t working - note left in car and off I went.
I barely saw anyone the whole way to the summit and once we left the main path it became a bit of a mud fest.
I was overtaken by a local on a bike though and we had a nice chat (me taking a breather)
Rather breezy on the summit so I forgoed my brew and chocolate bunny and headed to the Polish War Memorial then doubled back to pick up the Buckden Beck Path back to the car park.
I lived to regret this decision as the path was rather boggy and I didn’t love the scrambles :) although the waterfalls were lovely.
Made it back to the vehicle in one piece after a stop to enjoy my choc bunny and home time. " — charliegill • Mar 31, 2024
"On a round of Waldendale from Walden Head, also taking in Brown Haw 584m/61m and Naughtberry Hill 573m/34m. Cloudy, but with some sunshine. No rain. strong south-west wind. With RP and BC." — marktrengove2 • Aug 23, 2017
"Part of a 4 day trip to the Yorkshire Dales. We were lucky with unusually warm and clear weather for March. Although having only been up this peak 2 weeks ago, the friend I was with hadn't been there, and wanted to see the monument near the summit. We started at Starbotton and climbed up alongside Cam Gill, onto the moors, then turned N onto the summit ridge to the monument to the Polish airmen kiiled in a plane crash on the summit ridge. The weather was superb throughout the walk, with views from the summit of the other Yorkshire peaks and over to the Lake District peaks in the distance. We dropped down to Cray and had a refreshing beer in the village pub, before continuing back to Buckden village and then taking the old mines track that went back uphill for almost 1000ft, before dropping down into Starbotton." — davidlong • Mar 26, 2012
"We did this walk on the 2nd day of a 4 day trip to the Yorkshire Dales. It was a misty day in the valley, with bright sunny weather forecast on the tops. We set off from Starbotton village in Wharfedale and climbed up through patches of mist and clear spells to the ridge, here the going became very wet and boggy underfoot. We briefly rose above the cloud, to see views of the summit of Great Whernside 704m nearby, but the mist kept rolling back in to blot out the views. On the summit ridge, there is a memorial erected by a Polish airman, the lone survivor of a World War 2 plane crash at this spot. From here it is about 1km along the ridge to the summit. From the summit, we dropped down to the valley at the village of Cray, where a refreshing beer was had in a remote pub. From here we climbed back onto the hillside and took the track through Rakes wood to Buckden village and then took the riverside path for 2.5 miles back to our startpoint in Starbotton" — davidlong • Mar 12, 2012
