I didn't expect to find a road going up the mountain. The road is not shown on maps nor is it signed but its well defined and in good condition for a 4WD road. The road starts at 33.2077N, 107.7053W off FR-157 (C003) and ends at the northern summit of Brushy Mtn, shown on the 2016 forest map as spot elevation 7322. The highpoint is half mile away across a saddle to the south. Hub benchmark and a summit log inside the nearby cairn mark the high point. Should you lack 4WD, the hike up the road is 1.4 miles. Getting to the area: take NM-52 from I-25 to the small community of Winston. At a bend in NM-52 in Winston, go south on Republic road following the signs to the St Cloud mine. Forest road 157 starts across from the mine. On maps these roads are shown with county road designations such as C005, C003. The 2016 forest service map shows C003 going through the forest - that road is now signed as forest road 157. None of the roads are marked with county road number designations, instead they use street names: Republic Road, Saint Cloud Road, Chiz Road, etc. On my vehicle NAV system, FR-157 appears as Hermosa Road although I didn't see a sign posted saying that. County roads are wide and graded. FR-157 is also graded but narrow and does have some rough spots.
