"September 7, 2025. Left home at 3:30am-ish. Started hiking at 7am. Heard sandhill crane from the trailhead. Heard pika from the boulder fields. Lots of young western toads leaving the lakes. A few California tortoiseshell were still around. Hit the ridge and then the summit block. Did some scouting and went left/north around the summit block. Only a couple of short exposed moves. There was a well worn path to the summit, Summited at 10:40am. Down climbed back down. Talked to a few people on their way up and some were going right on the summit block and some brought ropes. Back at the rig just before 2, just in time to miss the rain. This was my final Oregon Cascades volcano. Just a few more on the list of 20 remaining. " — runningvegan • Sep 7, 2025
"Jon drove down and we got a noon start on Broken top. Super pretty hike out to Green lakes. The short 5th class wasn’t too bad but it was a bit loose so we ended up rapping it. The catwalk was super mellow as well. Went for a swim on the way out and saw hundreds of tiny frogs." — MatthewWinterberg • Sep 23, 2024
"A great little summit. While the vertical step below the summit can be solo'd I wouldn't recommend it to the casual hiker because of loose rock and exposure. Was worth carrying a light alpine rope on the climb to belay up newer climbers and to lower/rap on the way down. As of today there's a couple good pieces of cord and a rap ring above the step. Descend the scree to make it back to the lakes quickly :)" — beaucheminjess • Aug 11, 2019
"Left from the Green Lakes trailhead. Once at the lakes the trail cuts cross country to a saddle on the Northwest ridge. Whoever first cut that trail had never heard of switchbacks. It was a direct, grueling, and awesome ascent to the saddle and a final approach straight up the narrow ridge. a short class 4-5 pitch at the end brought us to the summit for some spectacular, albeit smokey, views." — etitmus • Aug 2, 2014
