"Trail is steep and steady. I made good progress and pass 2 climbing parties. A climber blows by me flying for the top I won’t see him again until almost at the summit on his descent. Chicken out ridge is not that technical but requires some
Scrambling. There is one Down Climb that usually has a rope but doesn’t that is kind of hard. Upper Mountian complete covered in clouds and snow.
Summit clouds break amazing view. Weird looking out and being higher than the clouds.
Descent steep beats up my legs and knees.
Overall impression awesome
Hike fun scrambling pitch made the descent hard on my knees" — ryancoburn • Aug 20, 2021

"Excellent early season climb. The ridge could be a little tricky right now since the snow is making it very narrow in spots. Probably a lot more comfortable later in the season.

"Camped at the busy trailhead night before, started 6:30am. Just before tree line, two young big horn sheep ran through the trail right in front of us. Seemed like they were playing, pretty cool. Chicken Out Ridge was short-lived, but lots of fun. Stayed mostly on top of the ridge, just a couple of tougher moves along the way and then suddenly reached the tower down climb. There was a rope for guidance and snow bridge was totally melted out. From there, a steep scree-ridden trail with some scrambling in the mix takes you to the summit. Pretty much relentless through all 8 miles, but awesome nonetheless. Beautiful day with blue skies and light winds on the mountain, but views of smoke layers over Idaho from all these western fires." — jodola • Sep 12, 2020

"3rd time up this one, Makes for a great day and a wonderful sense of accomplishment. My daughter Gracie did this the year before with me .Tim Bagley had this on his goal list- he passed from cancer ,I climbed this year for him .RIP my friend and brother. " — twobitmuley • Sep 2, 2020

"Great day on Borah. Perfect weather; some looming clouds toward the end of the descent but nothing beyond that. Perfect day for scrambling on Chicken Out Ridge. Snowbridge almost totally melted. Dryness meant lots of loose rock on final summit push. " — andrewmadsen • Aug 16, 2020
"Climbed with Danny. We got an early start from the trailhead with only two groups in front of us (neither of them made the summit). It was still dark out, so luckily Danny had a headlamp since I had left mine in NY. This trail does have tons of elevation gain in a short amount of mileage (5000'+ in less than 5 miles). We got very lucky with the weather as it was overcast for almost the entire way up, which kept us from getting roasted by the sun once we were above treeline. After chicken out ridge you would assume you are very close to the summit, but the last mile to the top really was a kick in the butt and I definitely struggled (super out of shape right now). We had the summit to ourselves for a short time before being joined by a couple other groups. The sun came out right as we were nearing the top and stayed out for the entire descent. If we were in that sun during the entire ascent it would have been brutal. We made very good time on the way down and I managed to fall hard once, when we were already back down below treeline. haha. Another state highpoint in the books. " — LGH-Tom • Aug 3, 2020

"Nice little hill. 5200’ gain over just a few miles makes for a hell of a leg workout! The infamous “Chicken Out Ridge” was nothing too scary- after we did it we didn’t even realize we had for sure done it, though the rope tipped us off. I don't like to trust fixed ropes so much, and truthfully this one really isn’t needed here. The real agony (awesomeness) on this climb begins after chicken out, when the bastard climbs the last 800’ or so to the summit. Definitely worth the trip for another high-pointer!" — LGH-Dan • Aug 3, 2020

"Awesome day snagging Idaho high point! Left TH at 4 am. Trail is very steep, but in great shape and easy to follow. Three small snow traverses still on Chicken Out Ridge were easy to cross. Trail became less distinctive going up the final summit block but up is up. Summit at 7:30 with steady winds and cool temps. Back down to the trail head at 10am with 5,500 ft elevation gain and 8.1 miles completed." — oregon-mt-goat • Jun 27, 2020

"Second time at this summit made for a great Labor Day! Started at 5 and the trail was quite busy. Summitted with Ryan Byers and some of his Pocatello friends (Spencer, Adria?, Alex). Very clear day, even calm air at the summit. Chicken out is much less scary the second time 'round. No snow bridge made the route feel much safer. Good to be back up there!" — robkleffner • Sep 3, 2018
