"Ugh. I'll be honest, not my favourite hike ever... But that's not a reflection on this mountain in any way.. just this particular hike in the dead of winter. The weather forecast said "a mix of sun and clouds", but that changed when we got there. Just clouds. No views. An unintentional somersault, and a few unintentional "butt-slides"...

"My husband and I opted for this hike instead of Big Slide; we were still recovering from Porter Mt two days before. It turned out to be a good choice. We left earlier and left behind a substantial amount of extraneous stuff we had been carrying "just in case". We took along only the bare essentials and our feet thanked us for it! The trail began at Marcy Field and was steep pretty much the whole way up. The trail varied from wet forest with mosquitoes to drier middle section with peat moss-like dirt that gave way sometimes to granite "walkways" cleared as if to make a nice sidewalk for us (albeit a steep one). There are several nice vistas along the way and spectacular views. We met a few small parties on the trail: one couple and another with a dog. Macey came along with us again and she did just fine too.
Just before the summit, the trail gets into a really pretty alpine forest. The smell of evergreen and spruce is sometimes really strong and reminiscent of daydreams you might have of the Alps. The scenery is beautiful too. The trees looked so green and healthy and the moss undercover was just like a neat green carpet of dense pile.
