"Nice easy climb - I met a section hiker - we chatted for a bit by the Shelter.
Also noticed the Bear bag setup there.
The mosquitos were out of control today.
I must have used half a can of OFF" — HeyJoe • Sep 17, 2021
"A scattershot of Frog Hill, The Torne and Black mountain on a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine and very comfortable temps. The hot and humid weather looks done for the year…woo Hoo!" — Nimblefoot • Sep 10, 2021
"Afternoon hike out of Silvermine Lake PA. My first time using snowshoes in Harriman SP, usually the snow isn’t deep enough. Followed two bare booters for a ways then did a bushwhack short cut to jump ahead and break trail the rest of the way to the summit. Great wintry view down to NYC." — Nimblefoot • Feb 4, 2021
"A loop hike on trail and off visiting some small peaks in southern Harriman state park. The Reeves Meadow visitor center/PA was full as was a dirt lot along the road so I had to park along 7 Lakes Drive along with many others. Fortunately only had to avoid a few folks on the hike as everyone took different trails and my off-trail travel helped." — Nimblefoot • May 12, 2020
"Ah the first day of spring, at least for peak baggers, and it’s time to get out of the house despite the big lock down. Because of my wonderful alpine start of 10:19 from home managed to get one of the last parking spots along RT 9W in the Doodletown area. Did a loop of Dunderberg, Bald and The Timp, where I had lunch, using trails, woods road, ski trail and bushwhack. Managed to catch a sight of two Pileated woodpeckers swooping through the trees. Many hikers out enjoying the fresh air and not following the stay home protocol. To finish the day I headed over to the Silvermine Lake parking lot, which was full of cars, to do an out and back of Black mountain via woods roads and the AT/R-D. A rather large beaver house along the shore of the lake, I don’t think I’ve seen it before, they can be quite industrious." — Nimblefoot • Mar 22, 2020
"Out doing a couple of short hikes late morning/early afternoon with the day really heating up. After cruising over the summit of Fingerboard I dropped down to the shelter passing a couple climbing up who told me about a bad bear situation in the area. Sure enough right near the shelter was a bear trap set up with caution tape strung around the trees creating a no go zone. After relocating the car from Tiorati circle to Silver Mine PA I headed up the woods road to find a young couple getting some woodsy wedding photos taken. He had to be suffering in the monkey suit while his bride to be was in a strapless gown with less than modest coverage. Her 4 foot train was being dragged down the rocky road and through the vegetation, I guess no one thought to pick it up for her and therefore reduce the cleaning charge. All the hikers and AT backpackers seem to be dragging in the increasing heat and humidity which caused considerable haze toward NYC." — Nimblefoot • Jun 28, 2019
"Taking advantage of a nice dry day, after three days of wet weather, by grabbing Fingerboard and Black mountains in Harriman SP for the Hudson Highlands peak challenge. Using the old woods road to access the AT it was a bit tricky crossing the lake outlet stream. Encountered a number of backpackers doing the AT." — Nimblefoot • May 15, 2019
"Hitting two peaks on the Hudson Highland peak challenge. An afternoon hike of Black and Fingerboard mtns in Harriman SP. Past a number of trailheads overcrowded with cars on my way over to Silvermine Lake picnic area. Fortunately there was room to park to do the short hike via a woods road and AT. Got the great view down to the NYC skyline then on my return I slipped off a log, crossing the lake outlet, so my right trailrunner went snorkeling in the surprisingly warm water." — Nimblefoot • Nov 11, 2018
"Tom, Steve and I spent the day with two friends who are hiking through our area while thru-hiking the Appalachian trail. Today Cathy and Kate are slackpacking a section from Bear mountain through Harriman SP to Island Pond near the NYS thruway. Again Tom's wife Anna pulled shuttle duty and kept us well fed and hydrated. After dodging fast moving cars on the Palisades Parkway we ascended Black mountain where we got a view down to NYC. The manhattan skyline looked like a mirage in the distant haze." — Nimblefoot • Oct 5, 2017
