"I hiked this a day after the overnight storm of Jan. 4-5; it was (surprising to me) not too muddy. There was one downed tree that blocked the trail, but it was fairly easily to bypass" — michaelwin • Jan 6, 2023
"A nice morning climb up Rhus ridge. We arrived at the PA just before 6 am and there were already 5 cars in the lot that only holds 8 plus two spots for the physically challenged crowd. Views improved on the summit and on our descent as the sky cleared. The trails out here are laid out so much better, particularly for trail running, than the rock and root strewn trails we have in the east." — Nimblefoot • Jun 19, 2021

"Peak to peak - Black Mtn parking lot was full, and Foothill college was closed (covid times). Ended parking off Skyline Blvd, close enough that I could get both peaks. Black Mountain is ok, tree's/shade to start, then open. Weather was nice, but I can see how it would get hot. Borel Hill surprised me with the views! So pretty at the top. "Only about a half a mile from the trail head, I came across a mountain lion sitting in a bend in the trail. I paused, slowly withdrew, and began waving my arms and making loud sounds to scare it away. It didn't move. For a good 5 mins, I stood there watching it, it watching me. Eventually, another hiker came up the trail behind me and the two of us advanced up the trail and sent it running up the slope. Only a week later, a mountain lion attacked a young girl in nearby Rancho San Antonio Park. Shortly afterwards, the lion was killed by park personnel. I can't help but wonder if these were the same individual, since the lion I saw had lost it's fear of humans. " — klotito • Feb 2, 2020
"Second time up Black Mountain. Clouds about 1000 feet up, but they cleared up around the top of the ridge for some nice views of the Santa Cruz Mtns. I was testing a new mountaineering pack by carrying a dumbbell wedged between a few pillows - made the hike a lot harder than I remembered!" — edg • Dec 13, 2014
