"Rode my bicycle from Avalon to the top of Black Jack and Orizaba. On the way we were stopped by a ranger who said we had to ride the extra 5 miles to the airport to purchase a $35 conservancy "bike permit" or go back to Avalon to get one. The official website only indicated that we would need a free hiking permit, which we did have with us. We opted to ride the extra distance to the airport rather than lose the elevation we had gained coming up out of Avalon.
Cost breakdown for the two of us:
ferry + bike transport - $162
"bike permit" - $70
Long Beach parking fee - $15
Total = $247
These peaks have fences and radio towers. It's not worth it unless you're a total prominence nerd. Furthermore, from what we can tell, this is not a true conservancy but rather a profitable business. There are no visible land or habitat restoration efforts, however there is plenty of evidence that they are raising a fortune in the tourist industry, with numerous guided tours and the like." — Gimpilator • Mar 10, 2015
