Returned to this pleasant seaside peak after several years. Started from the car park at Whicham church and walked up the tarmac lane to a farm, then up onto the open hillside on a bridleway alongside Moor Gill that steadily ascends over Townend Knotts at 300m and up to the summit. The weather was pleasant in the valley, but a strong cold gale force wind, straight off the sea was blowing at over 400m, which meant extra layers. Good views on the ascent and on the summit of the coastal plain, seascape and the Lake District peaks. It was clear enough to see the Isle of Man out to sea. After lunch in the summit cairn shelter, we walked NE, to view the screes and then descended the grassy slopes to Whitecombe and up to the minor peak of Stoupdale Head. We returned back up to the summit of Black Coombe, visiting the south summit on the descent.
