With my tail between my legs after getting turned around on Mt. Shasta, I set my sights on Black Butte. I have wanted to tag this one since it's proximity to I-5 makes it a temping option. The trail is extremely varied with forest trail, graveled trail, rocky boulder hopping, and snow traverses. Summit was well worth it with the views of the whole Shasta valley and the remains of the old lookout. Well worth the effort.

I'm thinking about this for next week. Was the trail straight forward or did you use any nav aids ? How was your snow levels for the area ?

Trail was super straight forward. There is a closure notice in effect for a rock filled cage that has slid down and blocked the trail but it is easy to get around. That area has seen a lot of snow lately so your experience may be different. Check in with the ranger in Shasta City to make sure the road to the trailhead is passable.
