I celebrated Columbus Day by “discovering” two new summits. Well, not really, but they were newly visited by me. From the start of FR 2N49, where Palm Avenue ends in San Bernardino, I began the hike. I stayed on the forest road for 1.4 miles where a use trail climbs steeply up a ridge. I turned right on the use trail which quickly reaches the summit of Devil Benchmark. I found the benchmark there off to the side of the wide summit.

The use trail continues beyond Devil Benchmark and drops down to Bern Benchmark. I didn’t find the benchmark on this summit, but I’m sure it is probably there somewhere close to the use trail. This marked my turnaround point on this small ridge. I retraced my steps back the way I came, much like Cristopher Columbus did when returning to Spain, or something like that.
